Interior Job Condition Specifications For The Application Of
Drywall Joint Compounds, Drywall Textures, And Paints/Coatings
1. Scope
All walls, partitions, and ceilings to which drywall joint compounds, drywall textures (where applicable), and paints/coatings are to be applied are included.
- 1.1 This specification covers the conditioning of gypsum board and concrete prior to the application of drywall joint compounds, drywall textures, and paints/coatings.
- 1.2 This specification covers the interior job conditions during the application of drywall joint compounds, drywall textures, and paints/coatings.
- 1.3 All materials to be used in accordance with all codes, specifications, and manufacturer’s recommendations.
2. Substrate Preparation
- 2.1 The gypsum board shall be maintained at a minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F), and be dry for at least 48 hours prior to the application of drywall joint compounds, drywall textures, and paints/coatings.
- 2.2 Concrete surfaces shall be aged at least 60 days prior to the application of drywall joint compounds, drywall textures, and paints/coatings. All efflorescence, form release agents, dust, or other surface contaminates shall be removed. The concrete surface shall be dry. Exposed metal shall be hand-tool cleaned and primed with a rust-inhibitive primer. The concrete surface shall be maintained at a minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F).
3. Interior Job Conditions
- 3.1 A minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F) shall be maintained continuously for the application of the drywall joint compounds, drywall textures, and paints/coatings until dry.
- 3.2 Continuous ventilation shall be provided to allow proper drying.
- 3.3 Whenever possible, permanent heating and ventilation systems should be utilized.
- 3.4 Whenever possible, permanent lighting should be utilized.
- 3.4.1 Job site lighting may not be representative of final lighting. Inspection shall take place under job site lighting conditions.
- 3.5 All drywall joint compounds shall be dry or, with setting type drywall joint compounds, hardened (set) prior to the application of subsequent coats.
- 3.6 All drywall joint compounds shall be dry prior to the application of drywall textures and paints/coatings.
4. Drywall Joint Compound, Drywall Texture, and Paint/Coating Application
- 4.1 Drywall joint compounds, drywall textures, and paints/coatings are to be mixed and applied in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
5. Interior Conditions for Finished Buildings
- 2.1 All finished walls, partitions, and ceilings shall be maintained at a minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F).
